In recent years, significant changes in bridge design have resulted in spans becoming longer, loads increasing and seismic design becoming increasingly important. Hong Kong’s Tsing Ma Bridge required an expansion joint with a longitudinal movement capacity of 1820mm, while the Tagus Bridge in Lisbon required a transverse movement capacity of 500mm to cope with seismic forces.
