Seismic upgrade begins on 19 bridges
Published:  November 13, 2008

A two-year project is under way to upgrade 19 bridges in the Puget Sound area of the north western USA to current seismic standards.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has appointed Granite Northwest for the work on the bridges on the I-5 highway.

"Earthquakes pose a substantial threat to aging bridges in Puget Sound," said WSDOT project engineer Amir Ahmadi. Improvements will vary depending upon the individual needs of each bridge, and may include adding concrete blocks between girders to prevent lateral movement, widening existing concrete blocks on top of bridge columns to enhance their stability, and reinforcing bridge columns by wrapping them in steel jackets.
