Minnesota and HNTB reach US$20 million Wakota Bridge settlement
Published:  November 18, 2008

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has announced that the US state will receive US$20 million in a settlement with HNTB Corporation, which designed the Wakota Bridge project that carries Interstate 494 over the Mississippi River.

The settlement, reached with the assistance of neutral third-party mediators, relates to the additional costs incurred on the project.

Small cracks were found in 2004 during construction of the westbound span. A design issue was identified and the westbound span was retrofitted, while the eastbound span was redesigned.

The westbound span opened to traffic in 2006 and currently carries traffic in both directions pending completion of the eastbound span in 2010.
